The Next Web のタイトルが
159,000 Teslas doomed to fail due to worn out memory chips
なんですが、単純に「摩耗する/した」の意味で使われていますね(正確な原因を示しているわけではない)
ただ Ars Technica の記事中の
an 8GB eMMC NAND flash memory chip with a finite number of write cycles, fitted to its Media Control Unit. The MCU regularly writes logs to this chip and, within three or four years, reaches the lifetime number of cycles.

と「書き込みサイクルの上限に達した」ことが原因が書かれています
ので、本ストーリーのタイトルとしては「eMMC のウェアアウト」というのは、それはそうなんだけどもうちょっと詳細に書こうぜ、な感じ

日本語としてもSSD等の耐久性が話題になるときに普通にウェアレベリングという言葉が使われるので、スラドで「ウェアアウト」が使われることには個人的には違和感はなかった。
ストーリーのタイトルとしては、まぁ、雑談サイトなのでそんな対外的に気取ってみたところで、って感じ?
